Our story

A long time ago, in the freezing Arctic winter..
where no plants survive...
Our story

..we set out to finally solve indoor gardening

Like, really solve it:

Photo · one hand adding water, nothing else

Make it incredibly easy to use

Set it up and go, no skills required.

Photo · a garden thriving in a busy, lived-in kitchen

Make it work in our busy lives

Forget it for a week. Come home to fresh herbs.

Photo · chilies & tomatoes ripening indoors

Make it grow anything

From herbs to salads to actual chilies. All year round.

Photo · Auk as furniture, in a beautiful home

And make it beautiful

Something you place in the middle of the room. On purpose.

Why?

Because plants are amazing,

and incredibly healthy,

and we deserve better than this:

Photo · plastic-wrapped herbs on a supermarket shelf

Plastic-wrapped

Harmful for you and the planet.

Photo · long-haul transport, a greenhouse far away

Shipped from afar

Bred to survive the trip, not to taste.

Photo · wilted basil heading for the bin

Binned by Friday

Bought on Monday. Drooping by Thursday. You know the rest.

So we got to work.

The early team, in the very first days of Auk.

Chapter 0 - The development years

It turns out some plants are extremely picky. It's easy to get them started, but hard to keep them growing.

So we started from scratch; given the plants everything they need, in just the right balance.

Photo · the team at work — late nights, whiteboards, prototypes everywhere

Livingroom workshop. We tested everything from light, water, pH and nutrients.

Photo · LED spectrum experiments glowing purple

The very first prototype. Believe it or not, this kind of worked!

Photo · pH testing — lab notes, measurements

Longevity testing. Monitoring the plants for several months, controlling pH, EC and taste.

Photo · nutrient dosing and water reservoir prototypes

Investing in production machinery. Preparing machinery for mass production.

Photo · the shelf of failed prototypes

Final production inspection. Every detail has to be right before it's shipped to customers.

After 3 years of incredibly hard work (and no salary)...

Chapter one · The first Auk
2021

Auk 1 is born!

Photo · kitchen-table packing — first units, tape gun, shipping labels

The very first Auk shipped from Tau, Norway. May 25th, 2021.

Through countless prototypes, COVID-disruptions, and an endless stream of supply chain issues, we finesh the first-ever Auk in May of 2021.

The first fully automatic indoor smart garden. Where you can grow anything on autopilot – in January, in Norway.

Auk 1 is born. A beautiful indoor garden – but built to last the Arctic winter.

Fresh herbs and veggies, on autopilot

..and poeple loved it!

Auk 1 started the indoor gardening boom in Norway 🌱

Then we took all the feedback..

started from scratch..

…and 2 years later:

Chapter two · The Auk Mini breakthrough

Auk Mini launches — A huge improvement (in a small design)

Photo · Auk Mini — big hero shot, centre stage, lush growth

Auk Mini is born – May 29th, 2024

From size, design, and functionality – everything we'd learned from Auk 1 – built into a garden that fit any kitchen and lifestyle.

Photo · Auk Mini next to Auk 1, size comparison

Smaller

Compact enough for any countertop, still room to really grow.

Photo · lush, overflowing growth in a Mini

Wildly good growth

Faster and fuller than anything we'd made before.

Photo · Mini as furniture — beautiful home, natural materials

Better design

Built like a piece of furniture. Recycled aluminium, real wood.

Photo · a simple refill moment, one hand, one jug

Easier to use

Refill less, grow more, zero fuss.

Small garden, big plants!

Photo · the very first Auk Mini, serial number 001

The first Auk Mini ever made. May 27th, 2024.

Photo · factory and warehouse, production at scale

Production ramps up. Starting June 2024, we shipped out over 20,000+ units across 30 countries.

…and Auk Mini became the fastest growing (pun intended!) smart garden out there.
